ODU releases three football recruiting videos

The Virginian-Pilot © December 20, 2013

Old Dominion has released three football recruiting videos on its Web site that were created for the school by Bluechip Athletic Solutions.

The videos were made available to potential ODU recruits in November, and are part of the school's effort to ramp up recruiting as it joins the Football Bowl Subdivision and Conference USA next season.

Eventually, the videos will be made available to the general public through aps for phones and Ipads. For now, however, you can view the videos on ODU's Web site at

While the videos won't provide most ODU fans with information most don't already know, they're interesting to watch in part because the photography is beautiful and they give you an inside look at how coach Bobby Wilder, recruiting coordinator Ron Whitcomb and others sell the program.

The first video introduces recruits to ODU's game-day atmosphere and football facilities at Foreman Field and the L.R. Hill Sports Complex. The emphasis on ODU's fans, who have sold out Foreman Field all 35 games played there.

The second video outlines ODU's "Aim High" philosophy about winning and having players do well in school and present themselves well in public, and is entirely narrated by Wilder.

The third was the most entertaining to me: it's all about Hampton Roads, the area where recruits will spend the 353 days out of the year that they don't play football.

"There are 12 games a year that you sacrifice for," Whitcomb says on the video. "Other than those 12 days when you're playing college football, what is your life like on our campus?"

On the final video, ODU uses testimonials from quarterback Taylor Heinicke, linebacker Richie Staton, wide receiver Larry Pinkard, linebacker John Darr, offensive lineman Connor Mewbourne and offensive coordinator Brian Scott, who talk about everything the region has to offer, from Virginia Beach, to downtown Norfolk to kayacking on the Elizabeth River on ODU's campus.

A crew from Bluechip Athletic Solutions spent a week in September at ODU, at the Oceanfront and downtown Norfolk, shooting video. Bluechip, has also created recruiting videos for Notre Dame, Alabama and Ohio State.

ODU paid Bluechip $82,000, plus a $15,000 yearly retainer. More recruiting videos are in production for ODU.
